I am off to Sydney early May (8th I think) with my sister.

What are some things to do in Sydney that dont cost too much? Places to eat that dont cost too much? Excellent shops to visit?

We are staying prob in Vibe hotel in Goulburn Street, Its walking distance to The Rocks etc.

Will you still be there for the weekend? If so you could check out the Rocks Markets (http://www.therocksmarket.com.au/) and also Paddy's Markets (http://www.paddysmarkets.com.au/) (though walking there may not be so great).

If you are over the rocks way and feeling energetic you could walk across the Harbour Bridge.

Ummmm....

The art gallery is free and lots of fun - a short walk from St James train station I think?? It's been a while since I've been into Sydney so someone please feel free to correct me:o

Yes, all the markets.

Glebe & Paddington markets are great with lots of handmade goods.

Bondi to Coogee walk, great walk along the headlands - a must do.

Kinokuniya - Japanese bookshop (corner of George & Park, across from Town Hall)

Newtown - lots of great shops & cafe

Balmain - another great inner city suburb , lot of great pubs

Surry Hills - unique shops

more ideas..

• Take a ferry to Manly..

• Museum of Contemporary Art (Circular Quay)

• Glenmore Hotel in the Rocks, has one of the best views of city from their rooftop and the drinks are normal prices. It's still in original condition... yes there aren't that many around.

Thanks for the info.

We definitely plan to do some markets.

I would like to go to Bondi, but I dont know if my sister will want to.

I will look up all these places in her guide to see what I want to do. She is meant to be seeing a friend so I may just abandon them when they meet up and going do my own stuff.

Walk across the bridge, down to Kirribilli, grab some fish and chips from the Kirribilli fish and chips shop, and wander down to Bradfield Park under the bridge for an in-your-face view of the opera house and quay. Kirribilli Markets are also fun, but I would recommend Balmain, Glebe and of course Paddington.

The MCA near the quay is worth a look, don't know whether it's free, I've only been there on school excursions.

Deb, yep we will prob go to the MCA...

I would like to go for a good long walk across the bridge and to Kirribilli and such, so perhaps that will be something to do as well. and mm fish and chips!

well, off tomorrow...

I am hoping to have a good relax while I am away, I really need it. I am not taking any craft, I can imagine I will start to do origami with leaflets and such.

Gotta decide what books to take too...so hard...I am thinking of taking The Hotel New Hampshire...prob about the right length for 4 nights.
