View Full Version : What is your day job?
Do sellers have day jobs to fund their crafts?
At madeit we have our day jobs.. I'm a graphic designer by day. You can see more of my work at http://www.justaddsalt.com.au.
Bec is my name, designing is my job and handmade is my love.
Would love here what others do for their day job... opps better go the client is calling.
I don't have one! I'm a stay at home mum, and my sewing business/hobby is my "job" :) My kids are all in high school, so I do a tiny bit of housework and lots of sewing!

I'm a high school visual art/photography/technology teacher so I have access to lots of fun equipment and materials...
I'm currently on school holidays (don't hate me for it! - I have heaps of marking to do which I'm avoiding  )
Buggz, I love how you do a little house work and a lot of sewing. Your clothes are great.. No little ones here but when I do I know where to shop..
Marisa, wow that's great. An art teacher is one of the jobs I would have love to do, all those materials. I have fond memories of my art room at school. Your students would love your contemporary style - my art teacher was there but not there..

Hi Bec, I'm Hayley. I didn't realise you and ms salt-shaker were the same person!
I care for my 8-month old daughter and I study part-time when I'm not working on heidi and seek.

I work in a gift shop/christams shop... So I get a lot of down time in the off season, and in the on season I am run off my feet and stressed out. Its a family business but I just kinda fit in with the mother daughter team, so they kept me on after the first season (I have been there 3 yrs now). I actually got this job because of my craft background and that I will try to do anything once, twice three times. Apart from the regular customer service etc, I do a lot of repairs, which is a lot of gluing...I just kinda picked up the fixing because as they say "I have the patiece of a saint" and will sit there for a pretty long time trying to glue a leg back on, fix a bow etc.
It would be nice to work more in craft though, and once I finish up at this job I going to pursue craft more...

I am a stayathome Mum of 3, this is my day job. When my babies go to bed at night, I go to my night job, which is my art and craft. For many years I stopped crafting, due to Post Natal Depression/Lack of confidence. But I am happy to say that I am back in the 'swing' and happy to have found my craft world again!
my bencke label is my day job. i make thing every day...having just moved to fremantle from newcastle it is all about my new studio at the moment. lots of room and no one to disturb me during the working hours.
i am also an artist with exhibitions in various galleries around the country from time to time. you can see more of these things at my website bencke (http://www.bencke.com.au/)
and have a sneak peek at new work in the making among other thins at my bencke corner (http://benckecorner.blogspot.com/) blog

Hey Marisa, great to see another art teacher! What year levels do you teach? I just finished fulltime teaching last year (Year 9 Multimedia) and am working on Anna Laura full time. I miss it a bit, the little kids are always entertaining!

Hi Anna! I'm loving the school holidays at the moment but today i gave in and did some marking :(
I teach all years 7 - 12 in a catholic girls high school. I mostly teach visual art and photography/digital media but also technology and visual design (jewellery and ceramics). Its pretty busy!
Strangely though, I often do miss the kids when its out of term. When times are tough or you're a little down - they are great at making your problems "go away" and making your realise that whatever it is, is probably not that big a deal (even if it is!) We have alot of fun in class...
Great though that you are able to now support yourself through your art! It must be very stressful at times but also super rewarding.
Dreaming of doing the same now.....

I am a full-time uni student. I'm studying psychology. I work part time in retail, and I do crafting during non-busy times like over the summer or during mid semester breaks... hence why my online shops are looking quite empty at the moment! But I do quite enjoy crafting vicariously through reading craft forums or blogs in the meantime!
I do hope to one day expand my crafting hobby into more of a 'part time' job, and quit my retail job, but until then, I must be patient!

I'm finishing my Visual Art and Design degree this year and I work p/t for an art supplier.
(well for another month, then I am going on a 5 week internship in Canada and I got told the other day there was no guarantee of a job after I get back! NICE!)
As for after my degree - I don't know yet.....I'm trying to avoid that question!

yeah it does suck, I am disappointed because I am a good employee and I work hard. But that's their loss. If there is no job for me I will probably focus on my final semester then start working hard on selling my wares and the exhibition I am hoping to put together (details on the promote forum soon)

Hey guys,
I'm another graphic designer but a bit tired of it... 15 years this year, blah! I still design print & web (though web is not really my forte), the cash helps my handmade handbags stay afloat.

Hi
I'm a SAHM to a 3yo girl and 22mo boy.
In my former working life I was a Project Manager working on IT projects. This life suits me much better though.
I absolutely adore working with metal and looking after my kids but I'm permanently exhausted.

Hi everyone! I'm a full-time uni student, studying Business (majoring marketing) but also doing IT electives on the side...hoping to get into a double degree at the end of the year.. On the side, I also work as a computer laboratory assistant at my uni 4.5 hrs a week, and casual as a checkout chick at Safeway. :)
I only have time for crafts/drawing on the holidays, so hopefully, after these exams I'll be able to continue my hobby! :o

I work in Marketing in a legal firm so things tend to be quite dry in terms of creativity. Glad I have my own business where I can actually run with my ideas. :)

I was a lab rat microbiologist then I got pregnant and decided it was the best excuse to leave that. I did half a grad dip of environmental planning then, on a whim, listed a few things on Etsy. I also work hard looking after my 18 month old daughter - who you can see in my listings.
I'm lucky to be supported by my hubbie cos I'm sure not selling enough (or working enough) to support myself!
