In Sydney there is Reverse Garbage.. thought there might be something similar in Melb.. Found the REVERSE ART TRUCK via google. Not sure if they have leather. The REVERSE ART TRUCK sounds kind of cool.

REVERSE ART TRUCK
This is recycling at its best. In an effort to educate people on the benefits of re-using materials to reduce waste, Reverse Art Truck recycles art and craft materials through school workshops, school holiday programs, after-school care, Early Learning Centres, children's parties, fetes and festival events. This non-profit organisation collects seconds and reject art and craft materials from warehouses and factories. The workshops cover a variety of entertaining and innovative themes and are always fun, creative, imaginative and educational. You can buy materials by the garbage bag on a casual basis, or you can subscribe.

sounds good, thanks for the info. I have looked on reverse garbage but I think I have to call them as there is no email I can find.

Thanks for the help.

Is the Fler factory still in Mitcham? A friend of mine made a dress from offcuts from there, many years ago. We went to school together, just up the road so it was very convenient!

David, if you can't get Reverse Garbage to deliver, you could try any of the furniture factories that make leather furniture or shoe makers who make leather shoes. They may be happy to save their scraps for you.
