View Full Version : Amber Teething Beads
I noticed in a lot of photos I seen on facebook of my friends babies, they all wore these beaded necklaces, male or female, I thought they looked cute, and assumed that it was a new fad, putting your child in jewellery.
Now that I am about to give birth I have finally realised what they are, Amber teething Beads. You can see them here (http://www.madeit.com.au/detail.asp?id=231567) if you are unsure what I am talking about.
Has anyone here used them or have an opinion on them? Do they really work or is it another gimic that the baby industry is plagued by?

A friend was telling me that when bubs suck/chew on amber beads it's supposed to be soothing - I'm not sure whether it's the taste of the amber or that the amber 'gives' when chewed. She seemed very sceptical about the whole thing. I got the feeling she just thought they were trendy.

I don't know much about them, but I don't think they are meant to be sucked or chewed, I think this would be a choking hazard. I think they are just meant to wear them and it acts a bit like a 'healing crystal' that people might wear. If they work or not I'm not sure, but due to choking hazards I would always be very cautious putting any type of jewellery on a baby.

My understanding is that of Love From Annie's , the amber has qualities that 'protect' your child :)
Once only seen amongst the 'fringe crowd' now seem to be quite popular.
These were not around as much as they are now when my second and definatley my first child were born ( luckily I had trouble free teeth for both kids), but I do have several friends now that swear by them.
3 friends say that they cannot be sure they have worked as they put them on their children when they were about 4mths old, have had not teething problems but do not know how their children would have been without the beads. Another friend's daughter was having terrible trouble with her teeth coming through to the point the mum was almost a breaking point. I suggested trying an amber necklace, and she said the change in her daughter was amazing. She went from a grizzly, miserable child to one that suddenly had teeth appearing without any symptoms apart from some extra dribbling. ( this mum thought it was mumbo jumbo when I initially suggested it)
They are worn as a reletively short strand around their neck so they cannot be chewed, or swallowed. Use need to look at the quality of the beads too. There are several shops that sell amber-like beads that are not actually amber and will not do anthing but look trendy.

My friends put me into buying one too) I just choose the raw(unpolished) one cause they believed to work better from this place Amber For Babies (http://www.amberforbabies.com/) - It's definitely don't solve ALL the problems, but i saw a positive change. So for all the moms who is hesitating i would say - worth trying!

I use them for both my children, i believe they work. with my eldest I only got them when his 2yo molars were coming through, and I did notice a change in his behaviour, less irritated, i suppose.
My youngest had them on from 4mths and only needed extra pain relief when she had 4 eye teeth coming through at once.
The amber reacts to the oils in your child's skin, releasing the mineral which is absorbed through their skin and acts as an analgesic or pain relief.
Do make sure you buy baltic amber.
the necklace is child safe as each bead is knotted before and after, so if it breaks (which it is designed to do, instead of choaking your child, only one or two beads will be loose)
You can only try them, if they don't work, there will be no harm done.
(please excuse the misspelled words-little late for me today!)
All the best with your new arrival :)

I have assumed with these amber necklaces that it was a trendy thing to do but I've noticed some feel that amber has healing properties as well. I wouldn't think it would be wise for babies to sleep in them at risk of choking.
For a bit of shameless self promotion, I've been making crochet wood bead necklaces for mums to wear that their babies can chew on for the purposes of teething. I have only one left for sale in my store at the moment (will have to make some more soon!!).
I think teething items come down to personal preference with common sense thrown in!!
